Despite being a murder, Beyond Birthday is not a cruel person at heart. All the victims of the BB Case were destined to die on the day he killed them. He could see their life span, and went out of his way to drug his victims before commencing with the murders. All his hatred and annoyance lay with his idol, the world’s greatest detective, L. A copy will always just be a copy so long as the original is around.

Aside from the subject of L, B is pretty light hearted and enjoys a good time. He does take after L in appearance and mimics the detective’s habits to the very core. From posture to eating habits, it’s not unusual for him to be mistaken as L…well that would be true if anyone really did meet L. He is childish when it comes to losing and tends to act a bit slow just to see how others think or react, but make no mistake – he is a genius.

He enjoys anything sweet, his favorite being strawberry jam since it tastes amazing and ‘sugar helps the brain’. He can be very blunt to people without considering their feelings, such as if you make a peculiar expression he will comment along the lines of you looking ‘like a ugly fish’. He also enjoys crawling around on floors and hiding under beds. If you have any manga lying around, they may be found in B’s room since he does have a strange liking for titles such as ‘Akazukin Chacha’. Of course, he treasures these dearly and won’t share if they’re his so it’s best you get your own copies.

Beyond Birthday; he’d endowed himself with such a name because of his eyes. From the day he was born and his eyes took in the world around him he could already see something no one else could. He knew your name before you told him and was also graced with the sight of the date of your death. Of course this scared the child but he didn’t sit around and just cry about the loss of his parents. No, the world wasn’t like that. The world was harsh and cruel and wouldn’t offer anything to a useless boy that just wept. Schizophrenic

B just accepted their deaths and went on with his life. It wasn’t long until he caught the eye of Quillish Wammy, who, at the time, had acquired a young genius that would be the world’s savior. But even if he had the world’s brightest mind, L was human. L would some day die or possibly be killed.

Thus the Wammy house came to be an orphanage, taking in brilliant children from around the globe in the hopes of finding successors for L should anything happen to him. Beyond was one of the children taken in, though this was during the infant stages of Wammy’s House. With the new home came the alias ‘B’. No, it didn’t stand for ‘Beyond’ but instead for ‘Backup’.

Wammy wanted to create a successor that would be a perfect clone of L, so it would be as if L would never die. Even if the person died, the name would still live on and the public wouldn’t know the difference.

This came to be known later as the first generation of Wammy kids – not far off from test subjects that formed and shaped Wammy’s House into what it is now today. The pressure to become as great as L, to surpass L was tremendous. A, the first in line to succeed L and B’s greatest rival, had even gotten to the point where he had had enough and committed suicide, leaving B to pick up where the other had left off.
All eyes were on B now, and he too was slowly was becoming unstable under the pressure of being the best, no, of being better then that. He had no goal of being L’s successor, but of surpassing the man – stepping on him.

Thus, B disappeared from Wammy’s House without a trace. While L was scouring worldwide sources for any clues to his successor's whereabouts, Beyond was quietly making his way across the Atlantic and North America until he finally arrived in Los Angeles. On July 31st, 2002, B had made himself known by killing his first victim fallowed by another murder on August 4, 2002 and then another on the 14th. This came to be known as the “Wara Ningyo” or “Straw Doll” Murders, a series of "closed-room" killings that baffled the police and the FBI. Purposefully he tried to gain L’s attention by sending a clue to the police and leaving hints at every murder scene. It was a direct challenge to L to see who was better; L as the detective, and his ex-successor B, as the criminal. L took up the challenge, in the hope of B providing a challenge for him and called on the assistance of a FBI agent by the name of, Naomi Misora.

She would act as L’s hands, feet and shield.
B realized this just after meeting her at the crime scene where the first victim was killed, crawling out from under the bed and introducing himself as Rue Ryuzaki, a detective also working on the case and offered to aid Misora, saying it would be best if they worked together. After Misora reluctantly agreed to the offered help, the two started to take apart the puzzle the killer had left for them. All the time, Ryuzaki was guiding her, not telling her the clues directly but giving her hints and setting her on the right path enough to allow her to notice things and figure out the strange clues he left.
But as much as he praised her on being bright and understanding why L had chosen her, in the end he underestimated the FBI agent. With gasoline covering him from head to toe and the sprinklers knocked out, he lit the single match as he heard her raging through towards the locked door that lead to him. But it was over, dropping the match, and flames sprung forth almost instantly dancing around----
